Adolescent and Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (AYSRHR) is a field defined by complexity, innovation, and the inescapable need for youth leadership at every level. As the movement to center youth partnership grows, so does the demand for tools that meaningfully guide organizations and individuals toward real, measurable outcomes. The Theory of Change (ToC) on Youth Partnership in AYSRHR, and its indicator guide, are resources designed to track and amplify the impact of youth partnership in AYSRHR.

At its core, youth partnership champions the fundamental right of young people to participate in decisions that affect their lives, as enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. This approach ensures that programs, policies, and services are genuinely relevant, effective, and sustainable in meeting youth needs. The ToC and indicator guide provide a visual and practical roadmap for youth-serving organizations to achieve these aims, clarifying both the rationale and the steps needed to embed youth partnership authentically in their work.

Individuals and organizations working in the AYSRHR field can best use this new ToC and indicator guide as tools in strategic planning, program design, and monitoring. This means that from the very outset of a project, teams can ensure that youth partnership is not an afterthought but a foundational element.

Some practical steps include:

· Program Planning: Use the ToC to map out how youth partnership will drive desired outcomes, identifying key activities, outputs, and the assumptions underpinning your approach.

· Proposal Development: Reference the indicator guide to articulate measurable goals and demonstrate a commitment to youth partnership when seeking funding or approval.

· Implementation: Align team roles and responsibilities with the ToC to ensure that youth are empowered as active agents of change, not merely consulted or informed.

· Monitoring and Evaluation: Leverage the indicators to track progress, identify gaps, and adjust strategies in real time to maximize impact.

Not only does it feature very engaging infographics, but it is also adaptable: any country can contextualize the content. This flexibility means organizations across diverse contexts can tailor the framework to their specific realities, ensuring relevance and cultural alignment.

Despite these strengths, challenges remain, particularly around resources for ongoing measurement. Lack of finances to monitor changes per country is a persistent barrier. However, the guide’s public accessibility offers hope: the ToC guide is publicly accessible and would need more publicity for all to access. Ensuring widespread awareness and uptake is the next step for the global AYSRHR community.

For those committed to advancing AYSRHR, the new ToC and indicator guide are more than just documents, they are catalysts for change. By embedding these resources into planning, proposal writing, and program delivery, individuals and organizations can transform youth partnership from a lofty ideal into a lived reality, driving better outcomes for young people everywhere.

The new Theory of Change on Youth Partnership in AYSRHR has been released with a set of guidelines that include sample indicators for use in tracking changes in youth partnership at individual level, within the SRHR ecosystem, and in society. You can access the ToC and its related resources here:
